What Should You Do in the Event of a Break-In?

No one expects to be the victim of a break-in, which means not many people know what to do if an intruder gets in. The idea of someone breaking into your home is a nightmare, but it’s important to know how to react and how to keep your family safe. In this post, our alarm response company will show you what you should do in the event of a break-in in Wolverhampton.

1. Remain Calm and Quiet

Whether you’ve forgotten to arm your security system or the intruders, have found a way past it, your response during those first thirty seconds is crucial. If the alarm is triggered, our alarm response company will be at your home to deal with the threat within twenty minutes. If the alarm wasn’t active, you can contact us after the authorities to secure your home as quickly as possible.

As the owner, it’s important to remain calm and as silent as possible. Yelling gives away your position and may spook the intruder, who could be carrying a weapon.

2. Call the Authorities ASAP

Even if you know an alarm response team is on the way, you should call the police as quickly as you can. Remain quiet, and give them your address as clearly as possible. Let them know there are intruders in your home and give them as much information as you can so the police are prepared.

Stay on the line with the operator if you can, so they can give you instructions on what to do and inform you when the police arrive.

3. Don’t Grab a Weapon

It’s tempting to grab a baseball bat or something else to defend yourself, but confrontation is never a good idea. If the intruder does find you holding a weapon, they’re more likely to attack you and could have a weapon of their own.

Remember, belongings can be replaced, but your lives can’t. So remain quiet and hidden, and resist the urge to grab a nearby object.

4. Escape if You Can

If it’s safe, escape is always the best option. If you can get out of your house without leaving your secured hiding place, you should do so. This usually means going out a window – but don’t attempt this if it could cause harm to you or a loved one.

5. Remain Hidden in a Locked Room if You Can’t

If you can’t get out of the house safely, remain hidden in a locked room until the authorities and your alarm response company arrive. At this point, the intruders will usually panic and try to escape anyway.

If it’s not possible to lock the room you’re in, barricade the door so the intruders can’t get in.
